Lifesaving Skills with Marin Medical Reserve Corps

Taking a lifesaving skills class is a great step in your preparedness journey. Last week our friends at Marin Medical Reserve Corps taught their incredible lifesaving skills class at the Office of Emergency Management. This highly interactive class taught the basics of Hands Only CPR, Stop the Bleed, Narcan and AED usage. Ember Stomp – A Huge Success!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Ready Marin tent at Ember Stomp this weekend. The annual event at the Marin County Fairgrounds was attended by over 4000 people. We loved meeting so many of our residents and sharing our top preparedness tips. A huge thank you to our Spanish speaking and Vietnamese speaking volunteers – we want to make sure that all our community can be prepared!

Chipper Days Are Back!

The Chipper Day Program is returning to Marin for the 2023 season! We are excited to announce that the chipper program is back for 2023 and preseason sign-ups are open now! This year, the program has restructured to improve the season while still guaranteeing the same excellent service you have come to expect.

The chipper program will now offer 5 pickup opportunities to all residents within the MWPA jurisdiction. These events will be spaced evenly through the season and will occur roughly every 5 weeks for all residents
The signup website has been improved! Residents will now be able to “drop a pin” at the exact location where they will be placing their pile. Piles will still need to be located close to the roadway and in an easily visible location for the crews.
Residents will now be able to view their reservation status, so that they can verify if the pickup is still outstanding or has been retrieved if they are away from home. They will also be able to cancel from the same viewing page.
Text alerts will be sent out at the beginning of each event week to remind those who have signed up that the chipper is coming.

The Chipper Day program is a great resource for residents who are looking to remove hazardous vegetation and create defeasible space around their home. The program’s increased pickup schedule will ensure that all residents have ample opportunities to take advantage of the service throughout the year. April is Financial Capability Month, so we’ll be sharing financial prep resources throughout the month to help you prepare for disasters.

When emergencies happen, thinking about paperwork might be the last thing on your mind. Once the immediate danger has passed, having your insurance policies, bank account information, and contacts in one location will help you recover faster.

Download FEMA’s Emergency Financial First Aid Kit
Keep your kit and financial documents in a safe place
Understand your insurance options

The free EFFA Kit from FEMA gives you the peace of mind that your important financial information is at your fingertips. It helps you organize financial, medical, and household information. The kit also includes a checklist of important documents and forms to gather. Download yours in your preferred language to get started.

Once you’ve completed the financial kit and gathered your documents, make sure you keep them somewhere secure. A small, fireproof safe is a great option. Consider backing up your documents digitally on an external hard drive or online using a secure cloud service. Having your documents backed up in multiple ways will help ensure you can access them when you need them most.

Finally, brush up on your insurance policies. Whether it’s for your health, car, home, or other valuables, knowing ahead of time what your policies will cover can help make recovering from disasters less stressful.

CERT Class of 2023!

Congratulations to our latest CERT recruits who completed their basic training this weekend. This highly interactive day included dedicated CERT volunteers acting as instructors and mentors and a visit from Southern Marin Fire. Students learnt a range of skills including fire suppression, first-aid, search and rescue and took part in two disaster simulations.

Advanced CERT Training in Action

A key component of dealing with a disaster is dealing with people. Thanks to Nancy Haugen PhD, a long time CERT and Marin County resident, CERTS were invited to attend an Advanced Disaster Psychology class at the Marin Wildfire Protection Office in San Rafael.

Nancy delivered a highly engaging and interactive presentation to our CERTs. We look forward to offering this class again in the Fall. Thank you Nancy!

All future CERT advanced training and volunteer opportunities will be shared on the new database, there is already lots of good stuff on there.
