April is Financial Capability Month, so we’ll be sharing financial prep resources throughout the month to help you prepare for disasters.

When emergencies happen, thinking about paperwork might be the last thing on your mind. Once the immediate danger has passed, having your insurance policies, bank account information, and contacts in one location will help you recover faster.

Below are three helpful tips to get you started. The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau has a short, helpful video with more information. Watch it here.

3 Financial Prep Steps

3 Financial Prep Steps. Download FEMA's EFFA Kit, Keep your kit and documents safe, Review your insurance policies

The free EFFA Kit from FEMA gives you the peace of mind that your important financial information is at your fingertips. It helps you organize financial, medical, and household information. The kit also includes a checklist of important documents and forms to gather. Download yours in your preferred language to get started.

Once you’ve completed the financial kit and gathered your documents, make sure you keep them somewhere secure. A small, fireproof safe is a great option. Consider backing up your documents digitally on an external hard drive or online using a secure cloud service. Having your documents backed up in multiple ways will help ensure you can access them when you need them most.

Finally, brush up on your insurance policies. Whether it’s for your health, car, home, or other valuables, knowing ahead of time what your policies will cover can help make recovering from disasters less stressful.

Community preparedness class at Meadow Oaks https://readymarin.org/all-hazards-community-preparedness-class-at-meadow-oaks-in-san-rafael/ Sat, 28 Jan 2023 00:46:43 +0000 https://readymarin.org/?p=13241 SRFD/OES delivers its first community preparedness outreach in 2023!

In late January 2023, the San Rafael Fire Department, Office of Emergency Services (SRFD/OES) delivered its first community preparedness public outreach event of the year. On this occasion, we targeted residents of the Meadow Oaks Residential Community in San Rafael.  Community residents were provided with all-hazards preparedness information through a 1-Hour-2-Get-Ready presentation. This 60-minute session touches upon critical preparedness aspects and resources to minimize the impacts of hazards such as wildfires, earthquakes, and power outages.

SRFD/OES answered queries from participants and provided handouts and other materials to help them be more informed and become better prepared individually and as a community.  Meadow Oaks is a Firewise-certified community that understands the importance of being informed, prepared, and knowing what to do in the event of a wildfire.

What does a 1-Hour-2-Get-Ready Class include?

SRFD/OES’ 1-Hour-2-Get-Ready presentation classes are 60-minute public education sessions that can be tailored to specific audiences. Topics of discussion depend on what is requested by the interested community. These discussions are strategically aligned with ReadyMarin‘s 5 Simple Steps to Get Ready, which include:

  • Understanding your hazards
  • Getting alerts
  • Making a plan
  • Packing a go-bag
  • Helping friends and neighbors
  • Organizing as a community

Is your neighborhood, Homeowners Association (HoA), organization or business interested in a preparedness class? Fill out the ReadyMarin Class Sign-up Sheet.

The San Rafael Fire Department / Office of Emergency Services (SRFD/OES) was recently invited to the Spanish-speaking “Cuerpo, Corazón, Comunidad” live radio show to talk about the City of San Rafael’s community preparedness efforts and resources available to the community. Acknowledging that community outreach can be challenging via certain communication channels, live radio has traditionally proven to be a successful medium through which key messages and actions can be conveyed, especially to the working class LatinX community.

SRFD/OES used this space to strategically explain the various community preparedness efforts being led by the City and County as well as to narrow down where and how to access preparedness resources that are unknown to this community. SRFD/OES will be partnering with Cuerpo, Corazón, Comunidad for future regular appearances on their program to address many other important preparedness aspects that benefit the community as a whole.

Cuerpo, Corazón, Comunidad airs weekly every Wednesday and serves Spanish-speaking residents throughout the Bay Area via KBBF 89.1 FM and KWMR 90.5 FM and also live streaming via their Facebook and YouTube channels. Recorded versions are made available on their website cuerpocorazoncomunidad.org/programas and as podcasts on Spotify.
